Multi-Factor Authentication coming to HiPerGator, October 18, 2021

What is Happening?

UF is enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) for HiPerGator and all ancillary services on October 18, 2021.

Why is This Happening?

UF is a high-value target for attacks designed to steal research data and intellectual discoveries. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the university’s security posture: since adopting multi-factor authentication, UF has seen a 99.7% decrease in compromised accounts. MFA prevents unauthorized access to your HiPerGator account by requiring a second authentication method in addition to your GatorLink credentials.

How Does This Change the User Experience?

Once implemented, HiPerGator Secure Shell (SSH) connections (including SFTP, rsync, scp) will prompt for Duo MFA. Users will have to either use their GatorLink username and password or an SSH key (see below for port change) after which they will see a text menu asking them to select an MFA method. Available methods are based on what you have configured in the My Two-Factor page. Anyone who has used other UF services, like myUFL or the UF VPN, will be familiar with this process.

SSH Key-Based Authentication Will Change

Users of ssh keys will need to specify port 2222 in their SSH connection string or config file. See the UFRC Help Pages for details. You will still need to use Duo MFA for ssh key-based logins.

Any connections, including automated scripts, set to use key-based authentication will require MFA.

What is NOT happening?

Any web-based RC services and websites, such as OnDemand, JupyterHub, Galaxy, or Support site, are already using MFA via GatorLink web authentication, so there are no changes to those services.

Samba (SMB) services will not be impacted by the implementation of MFA, so you will not be prompted to authenticate when mounting shared drives via exasmb.rc.ufl.edu or cifs.rc.ufl.edu.

ResVault will be unaffected.

The UFIT Research Computing team is committed to making this transition as seamless as possible for our community. Visit it.ufl.edu/2fa or contact UFRC support (https://support.rc.ufl.edu) for assistance with changes to SSH key-based workflows or for issues with MFA for HiPerGator. SFTP Host Change, Oct 18

The hosts (servers) used for the sftp.rc.ufl.edu domain will be changed along with the MFA rollout on Monday, October 18. No action is needed, though users should be aware that they may get a notice that the host key is unknown and be prompted to trust the new host.

NVIDIA DLI Workshop: Fundamentals of Accelerated Computing with CUDA Python, Oct 18 and 20

Date and time:

  • Session 1: Monday, October 18, 9am – 1pm
  • Session 2: Wednesday, October 20, 9am – 1pm

Venue: Virtual

Cost: $10

Registration: https://reg.conferences.dce.ufl.edu/SSP/1400082741

In partnership with NVIDIA, UF is offering another workshop to support applications of artificial intelligence throughout the university. The workshop will feature a hands-on approach to learning how to leverage AI and accelerated computing tools. The workshop Fundamentals of Accelerated Computing with CUDA Python explores how to use Numba—the just-in-time, type-specializing Python function compiler—to accelerate Python programs to run on massively parallel NVIDIA GPUs. You will learn how to:

  • Use Numba to compile CUDA kernels from NumPy universal functions.
  • Use Numba to create and launch custom CUDA kernels.
  • Apply key GPU memory management techniques.

Prerequisites

  • Basic Python competency, including familiarity with variable types, loops, conditional statements, functions, and array manipulations.
  • NumPy competency, including the use of ndarrays and ufuncs.
  • No previous knowledge of CUDA programming is required.

Suggested materials to satisfy prerequisites:

  • The Python Tutorial
  • NumPy Quickstart Tutorial

Hardware Requirements: Desktop or laptop computer capable of running the latest version of Chrome or Firefox. Each participant will be provided with dedicated access to a fully configured, GPU-accelerated server in the cloud.

Certificate: Upon successful completion of the assessment, participants will receive an NVIDIA DLI certificate to recognize their subject matter competency.

Fall 2021 HiPerGator Symposium: October 21, 2021 9:00-2:00

Date and Time: Thursday, October 21st, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Venue: Virtual Event via Zoom

Registration: https://informatics.research.ufl.edu/hipergator-symposium-fall-2021-registration/

It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the HiPerGator Symposium Fall 2021. the symposium will be held virtually on ZOOM on Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 9am to 2pm.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring together HiPerGator users and showcase their research in a broad variety of disciplines, share their experience and results, and foster communication and collaboration among HiPerGator users.

The program will feature the keynote and a series of lightning talks in the morning and a poster session in the afternoon.

We welcome students and postdocs who are currently HiPerGator users to submit abstracts for lightning talks, which consists of a 10-minute presentation, and for poster presentations. The organizing committee will evaluate all submissions and select the lightning talk speakers and poster session presenters.

The event is free, but registration is required. Register for the symposium at: https://informatics.research.ufl.edu/hipergator-symposium-fall-2021-registration/
